I plan to teach Monster alongside To Kill A Mockingbird to teach my students about racism, prejudice, and injustice. I hope to teach my students about understanding, tolerance, and acceptance. In today's political climate, I believe this is a very important message.
I hope to inspire students to stand up for what is right, even when they are not a part of the group that is being discriminated against. In order to fight these prejudices, members of the majority have to understand their privilege and use it to fight the injustices that occur on a daily basis. My goal is for my students to understand the depth of the racial issues that still plague this country in order to fight them.
