I believe these students need a welcoming, safe and quiet space to de-escalate and express their thoughts and feelings about their trauma symptoms and experiences throughout the school day as needed. These materials (bean bag chairs, carpet and multi-cultural puppets) would help me to begin creating this particular space, called the "Global Citizen's Quiet Corner" available to all students on campus (approximately 750 students for the 2019-2020 school year).
I believe my classroom theme of "Global Citizenship" is very appropriate for my particular school community as we have students from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds (predominantly various Central American countries ). When my students come to this quiet corner, I want them to feel as though they are accepted regardless of what their skin color/background is as well as genuinely proud of who they are. I want them to understand that they are ALL apart of the human race in which they ALL have feelings and unique life experiences.
The bean bags will be used to provide comfortable and fun seating in this corner. The carpet will allow for students to sit on the floor in this space if they choose and also reinforces the theme of Global Citizenship as the carpet design depicts people of various backgrounds. The multi-cultural puppets will add a fun aspect to this space, giving students an alternative focus on a bad day or during a time of crisis.
