After teaching 7th grade for two years, I have begun a new career as a High School English Teacher, teaching not one grade, but three. I teach in a small, Northern California school where education is a priority and while there is new impetus and grant funding to begin prioritising facility renewal, there is little funding for classroom supplies.
My classroom is made up of 9th, 10th and 11th grade students from various cultural backgrounds who have grown up together in a small town. I have created a space that requires attempts at positive culture building using Growth Mindset strategies and encouraging students affirm one another constantly. Shaming is not tolerated. I believe student choice is a huge motivator for students, and I have therefore created a space of flexible seating and have encouraged students to understand learning targets and have a voice in their own education.
