Books and Basketballs! That's what my students love...they love to read and they love to play basketball and soccer. We wanted to read Number the Stars but we don't have enough copies for all three 5th grade classes at my school.
When you grow up in the city, life hits you fast. Sometimes these kids deal with issues that children should not have to deal with at a young age. But the great thing is resilience and imagination. We wanted a book that the kids could relate to and we decided that Number the Stars is very relatable.
The second thing we are desperate for are basketballs and soccer balls. They will play all day if I let them. If the balls go on the roof as they do sometimes, that's it...the custodian is not allowed to retrieve them for us. It's hard when you know where the ball is but we can't get it. It's kind of like things in life that are out of reach. These kids live like that so I'm trying to fulfill two needs...great books to read and a few balls for recess.
