My first graders are a community of thinkers and movers and peacemakers from South Los Angeles. Born just a few years after South Central was officially redubbed South LA, my students' community needs, and has been laboring hard for, change more material than the name-scrub they were given. As their teacher, I want to partner with my students and their families in the concrete ways that I can.
While some of the challenging realities my students inherited--closing hospitals, incarceration, unemployment, empty lots--didn't leave when "Central" left their neighborhood's name, neither did their community's strength.
The families of South LA raised my students long before I had the honor of calling them mine. And as artists, historians, mathematicians, writers, scientists, and engineers, my students have so much to bring back to their families and communities.
