Our school has a very high poverty rate. More than 5% of our students are on IEPs. We have three ID classes as well as a KDD program. Our school also has counselors from the local family services to assist with behavioral issues as well as other issues we face on a daily basis.
My class is a 3rd and 4th grade ID class. They are at least two years delayed but they are open sponges ready to learn. My job is to keep their spark alive and provide an environment that builds not only their academic skills but their pedagogy as well. These students will always have to work hard and not expect anything to be easy. I want them to leave my room at the end of the year understanding that information is always available to whoever seeks it and it's within their reach no matter what the world may say.
