When we started the school year, all of the English Department was under the impression that there were new textbooks and novels for the juniors and seniors. We found this to not be true. The teacher before me took all of the new materials with her, and left my students and I with battered textbooks from 1998, and one class set of "The Autobiography of Malcolm X". We were supposed to get a huge grant for new books, but it did not pan out. Given that Oklahoma is going through an extreme budget crisis, there is just no money for any new books for my kids.
My students deserve the world, and they deserve to have materials that will challenge and push them to new heights; they should not have to pay for actions that are outside of their control. We are doing our best to make ends meet in terms of providing resources and supplemental material for our students to help them become college ready. I have pulled and borrowed from every resource I can find, but it is still not enough to give them the things they need. Please, help us create a brighter future for our students by providing them with the tools they need for success.
