I teach 170 young people from ages 10 to 14. The majority of my students are 6th graders experiencing Spanish for the first time.
I came to teach at this International Baccalaureate world school specifically for the world language department and administrative support of a bilingual-producing, communication-based teaching style . We are not a textbook-based class. My students do not fill in grammar worksheets and conjugate verbs.
In my class, students acquire Spanish by repeatedly being exposed to it, understanding and using it! They listen to and read comprehensible Spanish 85% to 90% of class time. I provide slow, clear, relevant input in a way that is accessible to all learners. In my class we are reading, listening, looking, acting, singing, writing, playing, and we are developing interpersonal and intercultural empathy. I'm trying to achieve world-peace opening one mind at a time!
