This project is being implemented with the entire 4th grade. Mrs. Yarbrough, Mrs. Ellis, Mrs. Ayers, Mrs. Howell, and Mr. Donovan will be collaborating on this project and it will include about 125 students. The topic of national parks started from a writing project idea. Glacier National Park is a special place in Montana that we want our students to experience and know about. We wanted to capitalize on this topic and have them learn about other national parks across the United States.
Through research and writing the students will gain a deep understanding of these special places and the importance they have to the people of our country. Along with research and writing, science, math, geography and history will be incorporated into the unit of study. The kids will hopefully broaden their understanding of the national park system, become advocates in protecting these lands, and gain an understanding of the history behind their origination. In order to accomplish this we will need books that will allow the kids to research and build their knowledge and understanding. The materials selected are appropriate for 4th graders and will give them hands-on materials to begin using their researching skills.
This is a high interest topic for kids and lends itself to many learning platforms and cross curricular connections. It also ties in nicely with the park system as they provide a free year long park pass to every fourth grader.
