The goal of the Rekenrek project is that students will generate different strategies for solving basic math facts and will develop greater number senses. They will then take these skills that they've learned while in small group and carry it back into the classroom learning. They will share it with their peers and use their skills in their independent classwork to help them become independent learners. Since my students are performing below grade level, many need additional practice with addition and subtraction practice. Rekenreks is a hands on manipulative that allows students students to practice new strategies for addition and subtraction.
The objective is that students will be able to make mental images of numbers. This tool provides learners with visual models they need to discover number relationships. Students will work collaborative to explain their reasoning of how they got their answers through math talks.
