I work as a Special Educator and Math Intervention teacher with 30+ students with disabilities and as many as 40 additional students requiring math intervention. I truly enjoy building relationships with my students and their families over multiple years since their services continue until they catch up academically. My students are adorable, smart, and hardworking, but many of them face the dual challenges of poverty and a diagnosed disability that has severely impacted their educational progress.
My students do not just need to make a year's academic growth. In order to close the gap in their achievement they need to grow a year and a half or more every school year to catch up with their peers. My students are diagnosed with various disabilities including ADHD, Specific Learning Disabilities, and Emotional Disturbance. Almost all of them are performing two to three years below grade level in math.
