I am transitioning into a new role as a 6-12 grade art teacher. My goal is to use art as a means of social and emotional education. In Baltimore City, not unlike many other urban school districts, our students come to us having undergone tremendous trauma, but without adequate coping skills. After teaching math to these same students for the past 4 years I have seen how hard it is to motivate students to be engaged in academic work when there are so many environmental factors affecting their day-to-day well being. My hope is to provide students an outlet for creative and emotional expression by allowing them to express themselves in a safe and meaningful way. Ultimately, I intend to use my new role as an art educator to set the stage for student success across all academic subject areas.
