Reading is not an add-on or a requirement of my class, but the basis of it. My goal as a teacher is not only to teach reading comprehension, but to awaken the inner reader within each of my students. In order to do so, my classroom library requires diverse books that represent the many diverse readers I work with on a daily basis.
Choice in reading is a huge component to reading development. Therefore, I have chosen to launch this project with my students' in mind: I would like to offer them a variety of books, both in reading level, content, and characters, so that they can find books that they can connect with to grow their reading ability.
The books I have chosen for this project come from diverse authors and represent diverse characters. In choosing these books, I hope that my students will find both mirrors of themselves in these characters and authors as well as windows to new perspectives. I believe it is never to early to discuss our differences and histories within a critical lense, and I hope that these books may help me do so with my students.
