My students are international. They arrived here in the United States from Cuba, Pakistan, Burma, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, Vietnam, Korea, Thailand. They speak French, Spanish, Burmese, Myanmar, Karen, Hindi, and Arabic. Many have lived almost their entire lives in the United States. Some have grown up in refuge camps. Most in countries all over the world. They have lived here for a few months or a few years. They are all gathered in my classroom for one reason in particular--to learn the skills required for academic English use. However, they are here in need of learning more. My students crave information about culture, slang, popular culture, history, and the values that we take for granted. They miss their homelands and they miss their loved ones. They come from educated and uneducated homes. Some are comfortable financially. Some are the poorest. Our high school is encouraging, supportive, creative, engaged, structured, and diligent. We have fun and we learn.
