My kids are serious movers! Between our before and after school clubs, physical education class, and recess, our students may engage in high intensity exercise several times throughout the school day. Students in grades 3-5 learn about cardiovascular endurance when preparing for the NY State Fitnessgram assessments, and are given tools and techniques to improve their endurance through bodyweight cardio exercises such as walking, jogging, and running. Our 139 students also have to opportunity to strengthen their stamina, practice daily fitness, and develop their running skills and speed through our popular Running Club. Our Running Club is offered before school, acting as an attendance incentive while promoting students' development in running speed and endurance.
Having a class set of pedometers would greatly help our students to differentiate between paces, measure fitness levels, and use quantitative data to inform their training and individual goal-setting when preparing for the Fitnessgram assessments and/or running club interschool events.
My students love to see the "numbers" and are motivated by technology to take as many steps as they can. With a class set of pedometers, we expect to increase student activity levels, improve Fitnessgram performance, and encourage healthful habits.
