I am an Affective Needs (AN) social worker. An AN classroom is a room students in special education programming utilize due to extreme behaviors. This includes hitting, bad language, sexual behavior, and more. Students spend more time with a social worker for mental health support compared to other special education populations. The goal is to ALWAYS have students spend as much time in the general education environment and eventually not even need the AN classroom setting at all.
The kids I work with are in AN, but they are also sweet and funny. They love to give hugs and be read to. Some of their favorite movies include Lilo and Stitch, Cars, and Inside Out (they love to tell me how I have the same name as one of the characters).
I love working in AN because I get to spend so much more time with my students. At the end of the day they are just kids who want to be loved by their teachers.
