I teach preschool in a high poverty school in San Fernando Valley, California. My students are English learners. Most of them only speak their first language at home and practicing a variety of literacy skills at school gives them the opportunity to understand and speak English fluently. Listening to books enhances their phonemic awareness, vocabulary, and letter recognition which are vital at this young age.
