My students come from a rural community consisting mainly of farmers and blue-collar mid to low income families. Despite a variety of hindering factors, my students come to school ready to learn and share their learning with others. Our school is set in the middle of a rural community, about thirty minutes from the nearest town and serves around 400 students in grades kindergarten through fifth. We also are privileged to have a Family Literacy program on our campus that assists several of our families with learning English, getting a GED, and other life skills. Due to the distance from more populated areas, our students are often isolated from many experiences such as going to restaurants, dance classes, museums, plays, etc. that many of their city-dwelling peers have easy access to. As a school, we try to expose our students to as many of these experiences as possible in order to broaden their knowledge.
