Gretna Middle School is in Jefferson Parish, on the west bank of the MIssissippi River, across from New Orleans. It's a diverse and multicultural school serving African American, Hispanic American, Arab American, Asian American, and Caucasian American students in sixth through eighth grade.
Jefferson Parish suffers from a 15.8% poverty rate with over 80% of our students participating in Free and Reduced Lunch. We are battling an alarming deficiency in core classes in which 78% of our students in Louisiana are scoring below proficiency level for Reading and Math.
In this precarious climate we must also take note of budget cuts in education. There is a need in the classroom: for finding new ways to improve our student's love of reading. This project will use its funding to incorporate a diverse literature library that will reflect the diverse school population.
