I am in my second year working as a speech-language pathologist. I work in two schools and have students from pre-K all the way up to 8th grade. I provide speech / language therapy services to children with articulation, language, communication, speech fluency, and social skills needs. My schools are unique because alongside classes of kids zoned to these schools, they also house pre-K, elementary, and middle school autism units. These special education classrooms are specially tailored to meet the needs of children in our school system with profound autsim. This means that over 60% of the students on my caseload have an autism spectrum disorder. These kids have a variety of abilities and needs. Many of these students with autism do not use verbal communication, and are learning to communicate with the use of picture symbols, manual signs, and AAC devices, such as iPads with specially designed apps.
