My students are raised in low-income, bilingual households in a large metropolitan area. Struggling with dyslexia and other comprehensive skills places them one to three years below grade level and creates a scenario where it is very difficult for them to read independently. Affording students the opportunity to work on decoding and comprehension will allow them, through continued practice, to become better readers. While the passion to improve their ability to read is present, many students are met with these roadblocks affecting their self-esteem and futures. My job is to improve reading skills and provide learning successes at school that will transfer to future endeavors.
