Keeping a common routine and steady timing helps maximize the students exposure to academic instruction. Being interrupted intermittently by pencils breaking and lack of paper hinders the flow and organization of a daily lesson. Students often feel that their "Walk to the Sharpener" is a social event eliciting off task behavior. I aim to extinguish this behavior through classroom management.
Self-regulation must be taught. Classroom management routines are the beginning of this process. One of my methods that I use is a Pencil Trading System. I will have a bucket of pre-sharpened pencils daily with the help of the X-ACTO high volume commercial pencil sharpener. A student with a broken pencil will TRADE with me for a sharpened pencil. It’s immediate and allows students to regulate their continuous focus to the task at hand. Often, students don’t even walk in with pencils or paper for class. They will with your support!
