My fifth grade students are curious about the world they live in, though sadly, many of them never leave the city we are in. We are about 30 miles outside of Los Angeles, and many of my students have never traveled the 40 miles to the beach, or even the 10 miles to the mountains.
Our school is a high-poverty population of around 730 students, grades Pre-School through 6th grade. About 86% of the students are on free or reduced-price lunch, and all students receive free breakfast. We host an after school program funded by a Safe Schools grant that provides a safe place for students to be until their parents can pick them up at 6:00pm. Those students receive free supper at school as well.
Our teachers work hard to design learning experiences for the children that are engaging and powerful, utilizing technology and current materials. We also teach English to the 50% of our students that are classified as English Learners so they can be re-designated to English Proficient.
