My students all have mild to moderate disabilities that impact their learning. They are capable of learning and succeeding, but it requires more time, energy and creativity than the typical student. Unfortunately after so many years of being at the bottom of the class, many students with disabilities come to believe that they belong to a subclass of students who will never understand what is being taught and who will never be successful in school.
They live in a high crime, high poverty, highly transient and predominantly immigrant community. They have few examples of even non-disabled family members or peers valuing or benefiting from high school and have developed the idea that education doesn't matter.
They can break this chain and be examples in this community, but they need to be empowered and inspired and they need people (you and me) to believe in them!
