The state labels us as a "failing school," but according to what standard? What people may not know about my students, is that they're incredible. They do not know that some of them speak two languages, or that they love to sing, rap, draw, skateboard, or dance. They don’t know the adversity they face on a daily basis. They don’t know that their friends count on them to be there, that their laughter can brighten the darkest day, or that they have a secret addiction to reality television. They do not know that they participate in sports, wonder about their future, or work long hours after school in order to help contribute to their family. They don’t know they help take care of a younger sibling. They do not know that they are kind, thoughtful, respectful (most of the time), and diligent. They don’t know that every day they are here; they try to be the very best version of themselves that they can be. Scores will never be able to tell their stories, but investing in their future can.
