I teach English as a second language at an elementary school in South Philadelphia. Our school population is 100% economically disadvantaged and 40% English language learners. Our students come from all over the world, Nepal, Vietnam, China, Burma, Cambodia, Mexico, Central America, and of course, South Philadelphia. Key School provides a nurturing environment for students, staff, and families to enrich educationally, and grow as positive social contributors in our world. We have excellent parent participation and involvement, although most of our parents do not speak English. We use extensive resources to communicate with our parents in their native language. Our students' parents are driven to help their children learn English and succeed in their new home. They aspire to achieve and live the American Dream. However, due to the Philadelphia School Districts' financial crisis, ALL of our educational supplies and materials are limited or non-existent.
