I work in a small charter school with less than 200 students. We serve toddlers to 5th grade. I currently teach first grade. However, my classroom is unique as an inclusion classroom. This means I teach students with and without special needs within the same classroom at the same time. This model works well for both populations. However, I have an average of 85% students with special needs, mainly Autism, Down Syndrome, and Seizure Disorders. My typical students are role models and encourage those students with lower academic needs. At the same time, they are learning compassion and integrity towards each other.
The students in my classroom come from very diverse situations and ethnic backgrounds.
I have students with needs for academics, many different diagnoses, health issues, economic issues, and ethnicity.
