Even though my students come from a poverty stricken area with a variety of social ills, they are far from downtrodden. The first graders in my class show me on a daily basis how to make the best out of any situation. They come to school each day with a fresh burst of energy and an unrelenting love of learning. These are the same children who rely on government assistance for the necessities of life, from food to utilities to housing. Even though these children come to school at a financial disadvantage, through no fault of their own, they deserve the same experiences as all other children in elementary school.
Our school is situated in a very low income area where unemployment and under employment are mainstays of the community. Most of the students at our school qualify for free and reduced lunch and Title 1 services are part of our school's educational support system for our students.
