I teach a class of 6th-12th grade English Learners. All of my students are below grade level in reading. Even within the class of EL's, they are reading anywhere from a Kindergarten to a 7th grade level. Despite that, and despite the different levels of English in the room, the most challenging thing is finding high interest, low level books for them. Everywhere you look for low level, you find "little kid" stories and pictures and titles.
It is so frustrating to look for reading resources/materials that are low enough to meet their lower level reading needs, yet age appropriate enough that they don't feel like babies when they are reading it. The Scholastic Action Magazines are perfect for my students. The interest/age level is 6th-12th grade, but the reading level is 3rd-5th grade. And the stories/articles in the magazines are engaging and will help keep them involved in and able to keep up in their content area classes. This is a win-win for everyone!
