My school has the traditional classrooms with desks and chairs. How many of us are able to sit in chair or desk for 90 minutes and expected to perform? Currently, the only thing that I have are light filters and a couple of lamps in my classroom, but it is where my students and even teachers flock to because of the calm, welcoming environment. It is a safe place.
I want to be able to create classrooms that are warm and inviting, where kids want to be and able to learn. As my district is moving to student centered learning in Reading and Language Arts, I want my students to be actively engaged. Many students need alternative ways to sit and move in order to maintain their focus and attention. I want to create something special for my students to show that they matter and their education is important.
By using the wobble chairs, light filters, flexible seating, and other sensory items in the classroom, the students can take charge of what they need to succeed.
