My students (Grades K-5; 9-10) benefit from hands-on musical experiences. Having a classroom set of ukuleles will help them build upon their musical knowledge in a very accessible way. Students can combine melodic, harmonic and chordal playing, and singing – all at the same time! Immediately upon picking up a ukulele, students can play four notes, and these can be used to create easily achievable accompaniments to both new and familiar songs.
In addition to the intrinsic musical benefits, playing ukulele helps support other domains of learning across the curriculum: Students are learning hand-eye coordination, fine and gross motor skills, critical thinking, creativity, and perseverance. All of these not only benefit students in the arts, but also benefit students throughout their lifetime. This project is about more than simply putting a new instrument into my students' hands; it is about giving them a chance to discover new things about themselves, realize their capabilities, and help give them the confidence and inspiration they need to pursue creative endeavors for the rest of their lives.
