I work at a public high school in Massachusetts that serves students who have, in many cases, not seen much academic success. As a school, we strive to make learning as interesting and relevant as possible. We also emphasize college and career readiness, doing project based learning throughout the four years and partnering with local colleges and universities to give students a taste of college life.
I teach 9th grade ESL at the high school. Most of our students come from Puerto Rico although we do have students from other countries. Most have arrived in Massachusetts within the last year, following the hurricane and its aftermath. Students take mainstream classes (with lots of language support) and then have ESL classes with me during which we do a lot of reading, writing, and speaking as well as learn new vocabulary every day.
