My students are accustomed to not having anything other than basic materials for class. They wish to learn new concepts and ideas, but if they do not have an avenue to "experience" and try out concepts on their own, the learning is not internalized.
Our school is in a high-poverty area, and many of my students' parents are not registered to vote. Politics is not as important to these families as putting food on the table or paying rent.
