Imagine a classroom of 100% low socioeconomic students, 76% English Language Learners, and students with low success rates. Our class is filled with students who, not only have trouble decoding words, but they lack the prior knowledge to help them understand what they are reading in the first place. Some of them have never been outside of our county! They work hard to make up for some of the lack of background knowledge and reading ability that other students already come to school prepared with.
