All of these materials will be of great use to my children in aiding them to learn social-emotional skills. I have included a stand-alone sand box to use for play therapy. I have included many new books and toys which have been effective with colleagues. Also included are some guides and workbooks to help me teach social skills and how to manage feelings. The kids will love the Feelings and Emotions Flash Cards: 40 Emotion Language Photo Cards. I have listed the book, Creative Ways to Help Children Manage BIG Feelings: A Therapist's Guide to Working with Preschool and Primary Children. Most of the kids at my school identify the feelings, "mad, sad and happy". Although they feel so much more than this, when prompted they fit each of their feelings into one of these three categories. It's important for educators to find creative ways to teach children topics like this. This book would expand my knowledge and skill set of this very important topic.
An Elementary School Counselor needs an expansive library! We all benefit from reading to help us relate to life challenges. Sometimes topics such as death, divorce and abuse can be more lightly approached with use of bibliotherapy. I have listed a few yoga books for children including, "The Grateful Giraffe" and "Meddy Teddy". I have been building yoga and mindfulness into my curriculum because it's a simple concept that children can understand but it is so incredible powerful in helping children to succeed. Another tool I have included for this purpose is the Yoga 4 Classrooms Activity Card which will give students pictures to guide them through yoga poses.
Thank you so much for helping our school! This is going to help change the lives of so many children facing adversity in Maine.
