Implementing a chicken hatching project will help students to improve many scientific skills such as making observation and inference skills, note-taking skills. The students will observe any changes inside the egg and compare it with the images on an embryology poster. As they observe any changes, they will learn to draw and write their observation and data in their science journal notebook. The project will allow prompt questions from students and provide good topics for class discussion when we learn about humidity level, hygiene inside the incubator, presence of bacteria, calculating hatching rates, factors that influences hatching rates, etc. Above all, this project will spark students' internal curiosity!
My students will be SO EXCITED to hear the first "peep, peep" sound! They will have to apply patience as they quietly watching chicks slowly coming out of the egg. Some will ask if they can help the chicks with hatching process and wonder when they would meet the rest of the chicks.
This activity will promote character-building skills such as patience, responsibility, caring, and proper dealing with loss. Many students in my class experience unfortunate traumas in their lives. This project will provide an opportunity for them to learn important social skills and relationship building skills. Above all, it will help them understand that every life is precious and valuable including their own!
