As teachers, we work ourselves to the bone! From setting up our classrooms, making anchor charts, laminating EVERYTHING, and planning the perfect lessons, we are always trying anything we can possibly think of to help our kids learn... yet we refuse to acknowledge the very basics...
Humans were made to MOVE! And movement is linked to higher academic performance and improved behavior! Anybody who has ever worked with children knows that they have seemingly endless amounts of energy. Well, I want to harness that energy and use it to help my students fall in love with reading & learning!
Research shows that flexible seating in classrooms leads to burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increasing motivation and engagement, improving oxygen flow to the brain, and supporting core strength and proper posture. I want my students to WANT to come to my classroom and read! Therefore, in providing alternative seating choices (such as wobble chairs) in my classroom, my students will be able to pick how they want to learn and trade in the uncomfortable "old school" furniture for some fun, comfy seating options that will secretly help them focus and grow as learners!
Question: do you sit still in a hard, plastic chair for 7+ hours a day and still produce high-quality work? Doubt it! So how can we expect the same of our students?
