My colleagues in the World Language department have noticed over the years that our students come to us with varying degrees of geographical understanding. Questions and comments that we have heard over the years include, "Mexico is another state, right?", "I'm pretty sure that Cuba is near Europe", and "Brazil is in Africa somewhere." Our students come from all neighborhoods in our large urban area, so our students are not fed into our high school from one single K-8 program to whom we can point out this shortcoming. It is a knowledge gap that we want to fill.
We'll need these requested two Political Relief Classroom Globes. Having two 3D globes to share and pass around our classrooms will help our students have a proper understanding of where countries and continents are in relation to one another. When I teach about Bolivia in Spanish 3, a globe will visually portray the fact that it is a landlocked country and where it is related to the Andes Mountains. Our students will be able to observe that Cuba is ninety miles from Florida and Puerto Rico is almost one thousand miles away, even though their relationships to the U.S. are very different. Globes will help us highlight these things more honestly than flat maps do.
We also need and four packs of Staples dry-erase markers for classroom writing activities.
