My school is on the west side of Chicago in a community known for poverty and violent crimes. A majority of my students are African American and my school participates in a program that provides all of the students with free breakfast and lunch. My students have hopes, but they view them as nothing more than dreams. The reality is that some of them do not have a supporting home that nourishes and fosters hope. As a school that focuses on social justice and environmental issues, we try to build pride within our students. My hope is for them to believe that college is a way to accomplish your dreams and to strengthen the community.
