My students are enthusiastic, compassionate, and inquisitive. They eagerly approach learning and have a passion for books (reading, writing, listening, retelling). The most heartbreaking thing many of them tell me is that they don't have books or educational materials at home. The reason for this? Our school serves a community with a highly transient population that includes a large refuge/immigrant population (50% of my class has a language other than English spoken at home). All students receive free breakfast at school and almost all qualify for free or reduced priced lunch. Despite these potential setbacks, my students have created a warm, welcoming community of learners.
