My high school students -- all students of color, and most living in poverty -- deserve to read, talk about, and write about excellent literature. This year we will be using the lens of economics and the flow of capital to understand how and why we live in the world we do. We are starting off with a literature study of utopias and dystopias. Given our current world (Ferguson, Gaza, Ukraine, ebola in West Africa, many of my students current realities in East and West Oakland) the novels now like a surreal mix of fiction and nonfiction, which will lead to deep, relevant discussions and writing. Our school has no funding for literature, so I am again asking friends to do what our tax base should be doing: filling our classroom with good, juicy books.
