My students come in many lovely shades. Sadly they do not see themselves reflected in the books on our classroom shelves or in their homes. I need our shelves to contain mirrors that my students can see their unique cultures, contributions, likeness, successes, and hurdles to overcome. They need to be able to see little boys and little girls that look and sound like them represented in the literature that surrounds them. But even more importantly, they need to own books that they get to call their very own. They also need books to read aloud to them. Books have the unique magic to take you away when you have no place to go. Helps me, help them.
