I teach special needs students in all core areas. The majority of my students have a specific learning disability in reading. Technology today offers programs and apps that will read text for students. The same technology will convert speech to text. The use of headphones will allow my students to have the same access to text as their non-disabled peers. The speech to text will enable my student to share their knowledge of content. The ability to independently study the same material as their peers will not only foster academic success but also raise self-esteem. An example of how using headphones will level the playing field for my students is my students will be able to have a current events article found online by them that fits their interests, read to them using the Read&Write app from Google. This same app will allow them to dictate a summary of the article to be printed and turned in just like their non-disabled peers. When we equip students with the tools they need to foster independent learning, we afford the the opportunity to not only match their non-disabled peers but possibly surpass them academically.
