My students are Chicago Public Schools students, who attend a vocational school that attempts to prepare them for college and career readiness. For many students, the literature classes they take with us will be the only literature classes they take and it is important that we expose them to the best texts we can in the hopes that they will continue to read throughout their lives. This is no small wish given the fact that many of them work part or full time in order to contribute to household income and/or will need to put themselves through university; as such, they do not experience leisure time for reading. That said, my students are eager to learn and open to improving their skills as readers and writers, particularly since a significant percentage of our students come from Spanish speaking homes and/or homes without books. Our goals is to create in them a culture of literacy.
