When my kindergarten and first grade students enter the library, we head to the carpet for our read aloud and group work. They spend most of their class time sitting on the carpet, and honestly, it's not very soft or welcoming. A new rug for the library would increase my students' comfort level, brighten the library with lively colors and create a more homey environment in which to work.
Most students would rather not sit at a table to read or work. When given the opportunity, my K-5 students head to the floor. Many of them lie down and stretch out to get comfortable under tables or various locations in the room to complete assignments. The novelty of sitting on the floor keeps my students more engaged, motivated and happy. Increasing the amount of soft spaces in the library would positively impact my students because happy, comfortable students are students that are ready to learn.
