There are two examples specifically I'm looking at for meeting NVACS: 3.5.2 - Apply the design process to generate graphic works, and 3.3.1 - Use appropriate resolution, compression, and file formats for various media outputs including web, video, and print.
Graphic design is hard without actually seeing your product come to life in real-time; by having my students create actual products, they'll be able to keep an example of their own work. They'll also be able to see what happens when they don't follow the guidelines for file outputs, and how different products can change the look of a design. By allowing students to create actual products they can take with them, they get a sense of how graphic design relates to so many other fields.
