I have 7 amazing middle school aged students in my self contained classroom. My students are creative, fun, energetic and are on the Autism spectrum. My students struggle with communication, social skills, and functional life skills.
Independence is a huge focus in our classroom.
We have many students that rely on adults for feeding, hygiene, and other everyday tasks. Encouraging students independence is vital to their future success .
My students use communication devices in order to communicate with others. Social interactions are hard, and we are working to expand beyond requesting something they want. Commenting, greeting, and refusing are all skills that my students have to work on.
