So many of my students give up on texts because they encounter vocabulary that they've never seen before. Our limited supply of dictionaries means that looking up a word requires them to alert others to the fact that they're stumped. If all of the dictionaries are in use, they have to wait--and during those precious seconds they often give up and try to guess at the meaning. The dictionaries we do have are missing pages and are of poor quality.
As I try to instill a love of reading to a room filled with reluctant readers, I need to remove every barrier that I can. A class set of quality dictionaries means I can put one on every desk and if a student needs it, they need only reach for it. The Pocket Oxford American Dictionary and Thesaurus is particularly helpful because we can also the thesaurus as a writing tool. In my experience, these dictionaries have held up well over time and meet the needs of the twelfth-grade English curriculum.
