With the integration of Common Core, Spanish and English language standards, and purposefully infusing social and emotional learning in my instruction, it is difficult to find resources in Spanish that meet the diverse needs of my learners. With this project, we will be able to launch the school year with a Spanish novel in the hands of every child in my classroom. With this “one book one classroom” Spanish novel study, we will have opportunities to discuss the themes of the text such as celebrating your uniqueness and persevering through any life situation while discussing literacy standards such as inferring character traits, character change over time, and author’s purpose. Reading is powerful where the character looks like you and lives like you do; the book serves as a mirror to your life. This text is engaging and culturally relevant as it is a mirror reflecting my students’ identities. It also provides opportunities for my students to create personal connections while also serving as a door to expose them to Peruvian-American culture. I strive to prepare my bilingual, bicultural and bi-literate students to be informed and engaged global citizens by encouraging them to appreciate, value and learn from other cultures. As this global learning is weaved into the fabric of our learning environment, it prompts student engagement, reflection, critical thinking, and invites the students to apply the insights learned from culturally relevant literature to their school work and future learning. Our future leaders of the United States are in my classroom today and I want to equip them with the best education possible in order to prepare them to be successful in leading our nation.
