This project aligns with District and building goals for students to meet reading, writing, and speaking Common Core State Standards. I am implementing the reading program developed by Penny Kittle, author of Book Love. She believes that giving students choice in reading, and meeting students at their own individual level, will encourage them to become life-long readers. Kittle’s approach to teaching reading is not currently practiced in our school. And because I currently only have a classroom library of 20 books, the implementation of the reading program will be a challenge. I need to provide books on a daily basis to students at all reading levels. Our school library is limited and popular books are often unavailable. Building my classroom library will put choice books in my students’ hands on a daily basis.
